SPINAL DEGENERATION

Spinal degeneration is like tooth decay. It can go unnoticed for many years without a hint of pain. By the time a person notices its effects or feels any pain, the vertebrae may have been deteriorating for many years!

The damage is caused in a number of ways. A vertebral misalignment alters the spine\'s center of gravity, putting more stress on some vertebrae than others, and the bone responds to the extra stress by remodelling and distorting its shape so as to keep the spine as stable as possible. It will lay down calcium into the affected areas in an attempt to stabilize the spinal joints that are malfunctioning, thus causing the spine to become permanently compromised.

How can chiropractic help? A primary objective of chiropractic is to locate areas of the spine that are malfunctioning and perform specific "adjustments" to improve its function and structure. Therefore, something as simple as making an appointment and getting checked for spinal decay can make the difference in the health of your life!

See below for what a normal spine should look like, and what the spine could look like after months or years of neglect. What is important to know is that it is never too early or too late for treatment.

This is a normal cervical spine. Proper spinal curves permit normal turning & bending. Openings between joints allow nerve roots to exit the spine without interference. The edges of the bones are smooth and well defined. Equal disc spacing is a sign of healthy spinal function.

Treatment: Regular chiropractic checkups are recommended for early detection and prevention.

Loss of normal curves and misalignment restrict or exaggerate normal ranges of motion. Ligament & muscle strength is reduced. Even with nerve irritation and soft tissue inflammation, pain or other obvious symptoms may not be present.

Treatment: Return to near normal may be expected with appropriate chiropractic care.

Due to years of abnormal loading, accumulated calcium deposition are now visible. Bone spurs attempt to fuse malfunctioning joints. Adjacent surfaces are rough and uneven. Joint instability is accompanied by continued nerve irritation and disc degeneration.

Treatment: Slowing, stopping or reversal may be expected with appropriate chiropractic care.

After years of neglect, complete fusion has immobilized the joint. Obstructed nerve openings cause permanent nerve irritation as soft tissue degeneration continues. This irreversible condition is usually associated with other chronic health problems.

Treatment: Slowing or stopping may be expected with appropriate chiropractic care.

 Prevention Is Easier Than Restoration!
